Just posted a new sapper on Liespace
http://www.myspace.com/edithpatch
The song is called "I finally feel free"
This tune hit me about 11:30 PM on Saturday. It's a yawner but its deep in content. Though its a long winded bastard the vocals (that seem to take forever to start because I seem to ride out this guitar riff forever) were done by Stacy Boylan about 6 hours ago.
The nice thing about having your own home studio is I finally get to sing some backing vocals. My cousin Ken is also playing some guitar and singing backing vocals on the tune.
The maracas, bells and chimes were all played by my wife, Dawn. Hell, I even broke out this wood flute thing-a-mah-jobby that I bought at Mount St. Helens. Also, I cheesed out and added the ocean waves crashing on the rocks sound effect. Seriously, the only thing missing in this tune is the "popping the beer tab" routine.
Hope y'all dig it. _________________ My Liespace

So I check my hit counter today and notice that the tune that posted yesterday received over 300 hits. I got mails from friends telling me that they liked it. But I also got mails from people telling me it sucked and that I have really pussed out in my golden years. Either way it was responses, none the less. So I cruise here and not one comment. Nope, Just the big Goose egg.
Thanks a lot you narcissistic fuckers!

I definitely wasn't trying to single out anyone, Al. I know you work nights, bro.
I was generalizing about musicians.
Most of the musical feedback that I have received throughout my life has came from the non-musician. I'm sure we all remember that moment when we were on stage and noticed the pack of dudes standing with their arms folded about four rows deep and usually in front of the lead guitarist or singer. Those guys would never give the band a kudo...ever. I remember asking a few veterans of the music scene "Whets with those guys....why would they pay to get in over and over again if they're not into the band?" Of course the answer was a simple 'they're musicians...welcome to the scene."
I listen to everything that is posted here on pdxrocks. Choose a thread in the mp3zone and I will have commented on at least 90% of the post. But there is something about this forum that is separate from the rest of musicians around town and I think its because we all used to verbally beat on each other so much. However, I really thought that history would subside and the pdxrocks persona would change considering it was so long ago. Nope.
I was gone for six months or so and upon my return I was floored. The MP3-Zone may as well been titled the Dead-Zone. Oh, people had posted but the replies were miniscule. Why is that? Say Karl throws a tune up on Liespace. He gets hammered with mails on Liespace. But here? Very little. My theory?
A vast majority of the members here on PDXRocks are musicians and not listeners. Also, they're musicians that want applause but don't want to applaud.
It sad, really, because some really good music has been posted in there to only catch the goose egg for a reply. Jake and Chelle's Christmas tunes were unreal (I think Christian was in on that as well..not sure). Also, Karl's adventure with Proven. I'd like to mention Jason as well. He did a practice demo over Nate's music that is some of his best and would shock most of the people here if they heard it.
I don't mean to sound like a fucking vagina but why are we (us musicians) such narcissist? Is it that hard to enjoy someone else's music and tell them so?
Years back I was on the radio with two other bands. We were being interviewed and the DJ asked us about the local talent in Portland. Each band (Havuk, Stepmother and Bombay) all spit out their favorite bands. Hell, we must have plugged 15 local bands between us. The next week Gargoyle was doing their interview. They were asked the same question and their answer was a simple "there is nobody really worth mentioning"
I never forgot that. Hell, we didn't need the plug nor did the Stepmother guys but for crying out loud, being on the radio is benefiting the entire club atmosphere so why not take the opportunity to plug a few of their buddies? Truth was, they enjoyed being top dog and might have been slightly afraid of tipping their hat to another band out of fear of being knocked off of the doghouse.
It's not only this forum. Its my pals as well. Not once have I received a comment or kudo from my closest friends. Ever. I'll slip a new tune into the music player and they'll purposely talk over it like they didn't notice. Hell, even Karlton and Mike have never once left a comment about my recordings (well, in Mike's defense, he and I had a falling out a few months back). Does that bother me? No...I fully expected it because they're musicians.
Musicians...damn, what is wrong with us?!

I had a feeling you were going to post that picture again.
Musicians won't even go to a show just to fold their arms anymore. These days, musicians won't go to a show unless they are playing in one of the bands that night.
"I Finally Feel Free" sounds great. The ocean waves remind me of Quadrophenia. _________________ *Ray*

I agree... seems like that now. No one comes out, even though JOL is doing pretty good I don't see anyone from the board at shows, unless of course we count the band members! A few have come out, but mostly it's the same people and their friends now, like the old shampoo commercials.
Say what you want about the Bay Area scene, even the shitty bands got support from the more popular bands. We all hung out and watched, unless it was just terrible... then, well, we just had to pee or something, all at the same time!!!!
Haven't had a chance to listen yet Marty, you know I try and check out everyone's stuff also. I spend almost all my time working while at a computer and I have no access to Myspace at either my jobs. I'll try and do it while Alanna's awake tomorrow. _________________ www.myspace.com/jarofliespdx - www.myspace.com/alsilveiramusic |

Funny, I friggen dispise Pete from the Who. He's over rated as a player. But he does have this knack for finding cool sounds and "I am the sea" is one of them. The ocean that I have on my tune is a direct rip off of that song. The sample was called 'Better than quadrophenia"
Nice catch, Ray. That is a good set of ears you have.
I think its time for you to start producing bands. You have a shitload of musical knowledge that could benefit a lot of people. _________________ My Liespace

Just saw this and had to take a minute to listen today. We've been very busy clearing/transferring a lot of the office material, desks, and so on, to Jennifer's house so we can start working remotely before we move.
I really like this one. In the beginning, with the waves and the recorder, I envisioned a lone Indian warrior (or maiden) standing on a cliff looking out to sea. Truly less is more with the drums. The alternate hi-hat/snare was perfect for this tune. The vocal work is really working well with you guys, and I'm liking the interspersed string/vocal exchanges. Not the easiest thing to pull off!
As for musicians and attitudes. The thing that really impressed me about my time in Nashville, especially at the Bluebird Cafe, was that EVERY single person that performed on Sunday and Monday night, be they amateur or professional, were warmly applauded for their effort. It's a totally different mindset out there....no crossed arms there! And the place was literally packed to the gills...standing-room only.
I met and conversed with J. Fred Knobloch after his fantastic impromptu performance, and let me tell you, he's just as down to earth as can be. And we're talking about a guy that has written songs for Trisha Yearwood, Ray Charles, Delbert McClinton, Faith Hill, George Strait, Lorrie Morgan, John Anderson, Ruth Brown, and Etta James. Great guitarist/vocalist in his own right.
It was the same everywhere I went with my bassist introducing me to diverse musicians, playing with and recording with some really fine people in the studio...meeting folks he knew at clubs, rock and country...it was just awesome...and a welcome gratifying experience....and it was good for me and Barbi to go out there and see things for ourselves. Barbi had promised me a nice Bday present, and this trip to Nashville was the ultimate gift.
Let me just add one more thing, and then I've got to get busy. The idea of less is more in this particular song, structurally, is really working here. I'm glad you guys didn't break out into a Def Leopard/Ratt-hash in the middle of this melody...like many so-called 'Rock Ballads'.
It's just too pretty a tune to waste that way. IMO it's perfect just the way it is.
Kuddo's to you all. Keep up the great work.

Finally got a chance to listen to it. Nice! It has the same vibe as the song "Black Gives Way To Blue" on the new AIC album. Only thing I'd say is that it's a bit long. I was like 7:57? Was it really that long?
Oh, and Anna says your wife has a nice voice on that second song
Keep 'em coming
I have some new stuff coming too, but I've lagged on posting it. I'll see if I can get it somewhere this weekend and link it. _________________ www.myspace.com/jarofliespdx - www.myspace.com/alsilveiramusic |

Oh, it is indeed a long winded bastard, thats for sure.
Tell Anna my wife says thank you. Coming from Anna, that compliment meant a lot to her.

It's the opposite for me. Pete is one of my primary influences. His live playing isn't exactly pretty. But then again, neither is mine. Even though "Baba O'Riley", "Behind Blue Eyes", and "Won't Get Fooled Again" gets brutally overplayed on the radio, I still think Who's Next is a perfect album.
I wish I would have been old enough to see The Who in the 1970's. I did see them in 1996 though. So at least John Entwhistle was still alive. They played the entire Quadrophenia album. Billy Idol and Gary Glitter were part of the show too. In the case of Gary Glitter, it's kind of funny/creepy to look back at in hindsight.
I should probably get around to getting my own music done before I branch out to other bands.
I dug the song length of "I Finally Feel Free". _________________ *Ray*

Great Song!
Unlike Ray though, I thought it was a bit long, but not annoyingly so or anything. The lack of repetative lyrics keeps you interested.
Kind of reminds me of something Chris Isaak would create if he met up with Peter Gabriel or something. Nt my favorite artists, and not meaning any disrespect. The song is gentle, smooth, and flowing.

I think it put me to sleep within the first minute...you could market this to that big wall of cd's at Target or whatever that has ocean breeze, sounds of the forest etc...lol...
And as far as people from board showing up to shows... don't think I have seen Marty out at a show since Hydrozeen days......................................

The last show that I attended for a local pdxrocks forum member was the Harmfamily, RNR show. My goal was to see every forum meber at least once and I failed. Karl is the only cat that I haven't seen live (I will thought...soon). So I have seen more than most perform live (even Scottie 7 thstringer when he lived in San diego).
(Keep in mind, Deak, that even though I didn't catch your show at the RNR, I still bought the band a round of drinks on my credit card...so I was there in spirit )
I found a new groove last summer. I attended a ton of acoustic sets and caught a few southern local acts while hanging in Winchester Bay.
