Mute Math - Mute Math
Mute Math is an electro-alt rock band from New Orleans, Louisiana. This four member group, comprised of Paul Meany (Vocals/Keys), Darren King (Percussion), Greg Hill (Guitars) and bassist Roy Mitchell-Cardenas, has acquired a broad and loyal fan base through the use of My Space and Pure Volume, as well as videoblogging their live shows. In response to this, their first EP entitled “Reset” boasted nearly 30K of sales and a very successful nationwide tour. Now, the group has recorded their first LP (self-titled) that is aiming to be released nationwide sometime during the Fall of 2006 but will be a “tour only” release and sold at their live shows. Therefore, I figured I might as well find out what the fuss was all about.
With the first track, entitled “Typical”, the band begins with some alternative styled fuzzy guitar tone and a very dry drum sound. This production is sustained throughout the entire album. The instruments are set to play a background role on this album, with the keys and vocals being the focal points. Meany’s vocal lines fuse the coarseness of Richard Patrick from Filter and Sting during his Police days but these contradicting styles give Meany’s voice a hard projection with a catchy and soothing tonality that is a terrific combination. In fact, the band’s sound is very reminiscent of the alt-rock pop sound that the Police coined during their illustrious career. But Mute Math has a way of setting themselves apart from their predecessors by utilizing hip-hop song intermissions that flow in and out of each other seamlessly and shifting gears to an overall techno-pop sound on tracks like “Chaos” and “Noticed”. Songs like “You are Mine” will appeal to Coldplay fans who desire the occasional ballad thrown into every album and “Stare at the Sun” gives listeners a quirky techno infused Astralwerks feeling that keeps the album interesting.
Mute Math is a group your will hear a lot from in the coming years. They have composed a very strong debut album that will defineately turn some heads. So if you have nothing to do on Feburary 2nd, go to the Roseland and check these guys out. They will only get better as they release more albums.
